Joint-funding program fuels partnership in HAC and EDS

IEEE volunteers worked together to benefit a local community and further their own skills by joining the humanitarian technology project, Automated and Sustainable Drip Irrigation System in Rural Nicaragua. As part of the new joint-funding project model, IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) and IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) provided co-funding to maximize project impact.

ITS Campus, ITS News – Following up on the collaboration of the monitoring website of Covid-19 (Corona Virus Desease-2019) patients, tracingCovid19.jatimprov.go.id, with the East Java Provincial Health Office, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), represented by a team of lecturers, successfully developed a mobile version in the form of an application, in collaboration with IEEE SIGHT (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology).

They are Dr. Diana Purwitasari S.Kom., M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Ir. Mauridhi Hery Purnomo M.Eng,, Dr. Umi Laili Yuhana S.Kom., M.Sc., Dr. Berlian Al Kindhi S.S.T., M.T., Agus Budi Raharjo S.Kom., M.Kom., P.hD., Argo Winoto, Vincentius Raki Mahindara S.T., Amir Mu’tashim Billah, Ahmad Laroy Bafi; a group of ITS lecturers, students, and a Covid-19 analyst who succeeded in creating a project entitled Web Based Application for Tracing Covid-19 in East Java Province, Indonesia. It is a mobile version application used to monitor Covid-19 patients’ data and visualization of its location in the East Java region.

“This is the third year that IEEE has been looking at artificial intelligence and the public perception of it with all the advances that are coming out. Most people think artificial intelligence is this magic black box. But those of us in the field understand that it really is very robust, proven technology. So, how do we look at how the public is going to accept it?”

Description:

The purpose of this award is to recognize a professional or student member of IEEE who has made an outstanding contribution to IEEE SIGHT and a local underserved community by leveraging technology to accomplish a sustainable solution. This individual has made a long­-term positive impact in the partner community and her or his SIGHT group, exhibiting constant dedication and commitment to furthering the IEEE SIGHT mission.

AN INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE BUFFALO, FOUNDER OF MAMAWAPOWIN IN MASKWACIS, ALBERTA

This article interviews Bruce Buffalo, project team leader for a 2018 funded SIGHT project in Maskwacis, Canada, a place formerly cut-off from the online world. Maskwacis is an impoverished First Nations Canadian community grappling with addiction, unemployment, and suicide. Like many other indigenous reserves, it is a place with little access or connection to the Internet. Bruce Buffalo, a Maskwacis resident and self-taught engineer, founded the Mamawapowin Technology Society (MTS) with the objective of bringing free internet connection to Maskwacis.

“Mamawapowin” – the Cree word for bringing people together – aptly describes MTS’s mission statement: “To bring rural, First Nations people together through connectivity.”

IEEE Argentina Section and IES 9-012 “San Rafael en Informática” held its technical workshop on “Experiences in the Deployment of Emerging Technologies” from 22 – 23 November, 2018 in San Rafael, Argentina. This was one of the events that HAC sponsored in 2018.

Speakers from the United States, Central America and Argentina participated in the event.  Topics addressed included renewable energy, computing, bio-engineering, implications of technology in society, and electrical and electromechanical engineering.

IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) First Call 2019 Notice

From 21 December 2018 through 31 January 2019, the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) is soliciting proposals to support Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Technology initiatives that align with the IEEE Board-endorsed vision of IEEE volunteers carrying out and/or supporting impactful humanitarian activities at the local level. HAC provides multiple opportunities for IEEE individuals and organizational units (OUs) to apply for and receive funding for projects, events, and conference participation support.

Deadlines:

  • Submission deadline for HAC Projects Call 1 is 21 January 2019
  • Submission deadline for HAC Events Call 1 is 24 January 2019
  • Submission deadline for IEEE SIGHT Projects Call 1 is 28 January 2019
  • Submission deadline for HAC Conference Participation Call 1 is 31 January 2019

The project “Enhancing the Speak Up! Suite of Voice Powered Games,” completed by Amal Nanavati, M. Bernardine Dias, and Aaron Steinfeld won two awards; The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s award for “Best Multi-Year Project” and The Dietrich Humanities Prize.
