IEEE Youth Endeavors for Social Innovation using Sustainable Technology (YESIST12) 2019 Bangladesh Pilot Round

IEEE Bangladesh Section along with IEEE Society for Social Implication of Technology (SSIT) Bangladesh Chapter and IEEE SIGHT Group Flash organized the Bangladesh pilot round of IEEE YESIST12 2019 innovation challenge on 27 July 2019 at Asia Hotel and Resorts, Dhaka.

In this pilot round, 23 team froms 11 different universities participated.  The judges of the competition were Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Prof., Dept. of EEE, BUET, Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section, Communications Chair, IEEE SIGHT steering Committee, Dr. Shaikh A Fattah, Prof. Dept. of EEE, BUET, Education chair, IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC), MD. Sohidul Islam, Assistant Prof., Dept. of CSE, AIUB, Shams Shad Rafi, Premium Connectivity Limited, S.M.Saiduzzaman, Lecturer, Department of EEE, Southeast University, Muhammad Ahsan Nahiyan, Fellow at Teach For Bangladesh and Mr. Abhijit Biswas, Lecturer, BRAC University and Tresurer, IEEE Bangladesh Section.

After the judgement and before announcing the result, Dr. Shaikh Fattah conducted a training session on Social Return on Investment (SROI), an impact assessment methodology that can be applied to sustainable development projects in order to take into account the social and environmental impact of a project in addition to the economic aspects. The objective of the training session was to train the young innovative mind present at the competition on how better their projects can have impact on the society and humanity as a whole on the limited amount of resources and investments.

Team BUET_Phoenix from BUET with the project title Third Eye: A Braille Display Based on Real Time Object Detection became the champion of this pilot round. Team RISER from ISTT was the runner-up with their project RISER: A Smart Multifunctional Robotic Crutch. Team Tesla’s Army from AUST and Team DUET Deep_Dream from DUET earned the honorable mentions.
