2022 SIGHT Group of the Year (Section Groups) – IEEE Kerala Section SIGHT Group
The IEEE Kerala Section SIGHT Group was selected to receive this award for its commitment to impacting its local underserved community through the development or deployment of technology. It has contributed to the SIGHT program by strengthening the SIGHT network, finding sustainable technological (economic, environmental, social) solutions to local challenges, involving the beneficiary population in the planning and implementation of a project, and actively striving to further the IEEE SIGHT mission.
The Kerala Section SIGHT Group was established in April 2013. In 2021, the Group organized a SIGHT Camp, which provided insight into the lack of drinking water for the tribal people at Meenkolli colony in Wayanad. This led to the HAC/SIGHT funded project “D2ReB” to install a solar-powered water filter system there. In 2022, the Group implemented “LUMEN,” a project funded by EPICS in IEEE, to provide street lighting for a tribal colony at Muvattupuzha, Kerala State. They also held “STEAM for Social Good,” a ten-day after-school coding camp followed by a two-day Makeathon which focused on applying design thinking approaches towards UN Sustainable Development Goals together with the Kerala Section’s Education Society Chapter. Another accomplishment entailed initiating a web portal where visitors can post about humanitarian problems and solutions to bridge the gap between needs and SIGHT volunteers who can address them.
This Group has been instrumental in starting multiple student branch SIGHT Groups all over Kerala. Volunteer members can acquire knowledge and skills through the SIGHT Group’s activities including both technical skills and personal problem solving and team building abilities.
