The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos Student Branch SIGHT Group from Peru had an impactful 2024, hosting three events during the year that showcased the Groups’ commitment to advancing Humanitarian Technology initiatives in their local community.
STEMPower: Women in Science and Technology
The STEMPower event was designed to inspire and empower young women in STEM, highlighting their pivotal role in driving innovation and progress. Featuring esteemed scientists like Leslie Cieza, Paola Moreno, Thalía Leyton, and Nathaly Dongo, the event covered topics such as pursuing doctorates abroad, the initial steps in creating medical devices, the application of artificial intelligence in medicine, and international STEM opportunities. This event aimed to highlight the transformative potential of women in STEM, encouraging their leadership and active participation.
SIGHT Day 2024
SIGHT Day 2024 was a global event gathering of professionals dedicated to tackling humanitarian challenges through technology. Conducted in a hybrid format, the event featured keynote speeches, practical workshops, and presentations of humanitarian projects. Notable contributors included Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi, who discussed local social challenges via IEEE’s Humanitarian Technologies programs, and Dr. César Beltrán, president of the IEEE Peru Section, who delivered a keynote on artificial intelligence as a crucial tool for humanity. These and other distinguished presentations created a unique environment for exchanging knowledge and advocating for global positive social impact.
TechXchange: Fostering Technological Innovation with Social Impact
TechXchange is a program created for young people passionate about technological innovation with a strong emphasis on social impact and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program’s aim was to develop and implement innovative technological solutions that address social challenges, fostering positive and sustainable change. Participants received training in technical skills and project management, helping them to develop key skills in tackling today’s social and environmental issues. The program, divided into phases, included fundamentals of humanitarian projects, technology implementation, and practical tools, culminating in a Hackathon where participants showcased innovative solutions to real-world challenges. This program fostered leadership and promoted the development of sustainable technological projects for positive change in participants’ local communities.
