A Year in Review: Silver Oak University Student Branch & Gujarat Section
The Silver Oak University Student Branch SIGHT Group and the Gujarat Section SIGHT Group from India had a successful 2024, spearheading a series of collaborative initiatives designed to foster awareness, inclusivity, and technological empowerment. These events addressed key societal challenges while aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing a deep commitment to meaningful community engagement.
A standout event was the “Seminar on Girl Safety” held on the 21 March. Organized by the Silver Oak University Student Branch SIGHT Group and held in collaboration with the Gujarat Section SIGHT Group, this seminar focused on empowering young girls with knowledge about personal safety, digital security, and self-defense. This event emphasized SDG 5: Gender Equality, and had active participation from over 100 attendees, primarily young women and girls from across Gujarat.
On 29 April both SIGHT Groups organized a grand celebration for IEEE SIGHT Day. This event served as an inspiration for participants to engage in socially impactful, technology-driven projects.
Another milestone event was the G.Y.A.N.: Generating Youth Awareness in New Technologies initiative held on 4 July orchestrated by both groups. This workshop introduced high school and undergraduate students to groundbreaking technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, CyberSecurity, and Blockchain.
In 2024 September, the “Cloud Computing Foundational Camp” was conducted jointly by both groups. This camp targeted underprivileged students and recent graduates, offered introductions to cloud computing fundamentals and applications, empowering participants with enhanced technical skills and striving toward SDG 4 through education and skill development.
Collectively, these initiatives engaged over 500 participants, including students, educators, and professionals, with women making up approximately 40% of attendees. This broad engagement underscores a commitment to gender inclusivity and equitable access to knowledge and opportunities, drawing participants from both urban and rural parts of Gujarat.
Through these collaborative efforts, both the DISHA (Gujarat Section) and the Silver Oak University IEEE SIGHT Student Branch Group have successfully inspired innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable development, contributing significantly to the betterment of humanity.
